If I asked you to grab a piece of paper and jot down the top three challenges you’re facing in your business right now, I bet you could whip up your list in no time…
You might be grappling with slow sales, a lack of visibility, dwindling profits, or perhaps issues with hiring and retaining good employees. The list could go on and on.
But here’s the thing: If you take a second to look at the challenges you were about to write down, you might recognise that what you identified are actually symptoms, not the real issue.
The danger is this:
If we misdiagnose or mislabel the problem, we end up seeking remedies that only mask the symptoms instead of fixing the actual issue. And let’s be honest; that’s a prescription for frustration, and in some cases, outright failure.
To truly solve our business woes, we need to get to the root causes – the obstacles that are preventing us from reaching our goals.
For example, here’s a scenario many of us can relate to:
You notice that your income has plateaued or is not growing at the speed you envisioned. While this might seem like a problem, it is typically just a symptom of something greater.
Without nailing down the root cause, we often dive headfirst into a search for quick fixes…
We might be tempted to spend more time and money on marketing, or launch more special offers, or invest in more training to enhance our core skills and offerings. But these are often ‘Sticking Plaster’ solutions.
So let’s take a ‘time-out’…
Imagine you spend an hour really mulling over the real hindrances keeping your income from climbing. Your list could reveal some deeper issues, such as:
- Not charging enough
- Too many discounts given
- Insufficient repeat business and referrals
- Too many appointment cancellations / postponements
- Fierce competition in your market
- No clear competitive advantage
- Weak marketing that fails to grab attention
- Inconsistent marketing effort
- Low conversion % from enquiry to consultation
- Low conversion % from consultation to treatment
- Sales skills lacking among your team
- Team not motivated / incentivised enough
Each of these points (and many more) reflects a potential root cause, and each could require a completely different strategy to address.
Plus, within each of these categories, there are often several sub-issues that contribute to the larger problem.
Now, I get it – figuring this all out isn’t a stroll in the park…
It demands persistence, a fresh perspective, and sometimes, a bit of tough love.
That’s why working with a business coach or a trusted advisor can be an absolute game-changer. They can help you take an honest look at your business, challenge your assumptions, and ask the hard questions that no one else will bring up. This process is invaluable in separating symptoms from the actual root causes.
Whatever approach you choose to take, please remember that the solutions you come up with should always aim to help you tackle the obstacle blocking your path forward, rather than just relieving the discomfort of the symptoms.
Or as my own business coach once said: If we truly want to succeed, we need to focus on fixing the leaks, not just catching the drips.
There’s a lot more to share, but for right now, I would like you to take some time to pause and spark your thinking…
